Workout tops are often described through their fabric technology, but the cut can determine whether you enjoy wearing them. A hem that rises constantly or a sleeve that catches at the shoulder may matter more than a long list of performance terms. Try the movements you expect to make before choosing a top for its advertised features.
Wear the intended sports bra or underlayer during the try-on. It changes how a neckline and armhole sit, and a top that looks opaque on its own can reveal a contrasting layer through open mesh. Decide whether those visible elements are part of the outfit you want.
Follow the sleeve when you reach
Raise your arms, bring them forward, and reach across your body. Notice whether the shoulder seam restricts the motion or the whole top lifts with the sleeve. A fitted sleeve, a dropped shoulder, and a sleeveless cut each distribute room differently. A larger size may add length without improving the part that is catching.
Check the underarm opening from the side. A deep armhole can reduce crowding but expose more of the bra. If that requires another layer for you to feel comfortable, include it in the fitting decision. More layers can change the warmth and movement you expected from the original top.
The hem should match the activity. A loose lower edge may be pleasant for walking, while bending or floor work can move it toward the shoulders. A close hem may stay put but feel restrictive around the hips. Test the relevant position rather than choosing by a front-facing mirror view.
Add the layer you leave home in
Put on your usual sweatshirt or jacket. Wide sleeves and thumb loops can bunch underneath; a high collar can compete with the outer layer's zipper. Remove the jacket again and see whether the top settles without a lengthy adjustment.
If you carry a phone or key, inspect any pocket with that actual item. A tiny pocket may suit a key but not a phone, even when the listing calls it storage. Check that the loaded fabric does not pull the neckline or hem out of place.
Read the care instructions before adding the top to a routine wash load. The best choice supports the movements and layering you actually do, with construction you can maintain. A technically impressive fabric cannot compensate for a shape that repeatedly interrupts your activity.
