A henley sits between a plain T-shirt and a shirt with a fuller front opening. Its short placket adds adjustable coverage and a visible line of buttons, but that detail also creates thickness at the chest. When choosing one as a layer, examine how the placket behaves under the clothes you will wear over it.
Try the neckline fully fastened and at your usual open setting. Some bands sit close to the neck; others spread outward when unbuttoned. Move your head and look down. A small opening can still reveal more than expected when you lean forward, especially in a loose garment.
With a crewneck sweater, the henley buttons may be hidden but their thickness can remain visible. With a cardigan or open jacket, the placket becomes part of the outfit. Neither arrangement requires a special rule, but it is worth testing before buying a color that only works in one carefully arranged combination.
Check the transition around the placket
Look where the reinforced opening meets the softer body fabric. If the front twists or puckers noticeably while the shirt is worn, compare another example or size. A firm placket can hold its line, but it may feel different against the body from the surrounding knit.
The shoulder and sleeve fit matter for layering too. A close sleeve may fit beneath a jacket easily while restricting movement on its own. A roomy sleeve may be comfortable but bunch under a sweater. Try a forward reach and then add the intended outer layer.
Length determines whether the henley behaves more like an undershirt or an untucked top. Check the hem with your usual waistband. A long curved tail may stay tucked but extend beneath a short jacket; a short straight hem can lift when you reach. Choose for the role you need rather than treating one length as universally versatile.
Finally, inspect the buttons and care label. Small fasteners should be securely attached and easy to use without pulling the fabric. A henley is useful when its neckline and texture add something to your existing clothes, not merely because it offers more detail than a plain tee.
