A laundry bag can keep small items together and reduce direct contact with other garments, but it does not make an unsuitable wash cycle safe. Start with the item's care label. If machine washing is not permitted, putting it inside mesh does not change that instruction.
For items that may be machine washed, choose a bag with enough room for the garment to move. A tightly packed bundle can remain folded against itself. Several small bags may work better than one stuffed bag when washing separate delicate pieces.
Mesh and closure details
Look at the size of the openings and the finish of the seams. Very small hooks or narrow straps may behave differently in coarse mesh than in a finer material. The bag should not have rough internal edges that defeat its purpose.
Check the zipper cover or fastening tab. A covered pull can help keep the closure from rubbing against other items, but inspect how it is secured. A zipper that opens during the wash turns the bag into an unreliable container.
Use the intended closure and do not improvise with sharp pins or metal clips. If the mesh has a tear, repair or replace the bag before placing small items inside; they can escape through a surprisingly modest opening.
Separate incompatible items
A laundry bag is not a barrier against dye transfer, incompatible detergent, or unsuitable heat. Sort garments according to their care needs and colors as instructed. Do not combine a dark item that requires separate washing with a light item simply because each has a mesh enclosure.
Close garment fastenings where the maker recommends it, and keep sharp hooks from catching delicate surfaces. Avoid overloading the machine; the bag's contents still need an appropriate process around them.
After washing, remove the items and follow their drying instructions. A bag that is useful in a washer is not automatically approved for the dryer, and the garment may require flat or line drying regardless.
Let the empty bag dry before storing it. Check periodically for trapped debris, damaged seams, and a failing zipper. It is an inexpensive tool, but its condition affects how predictably it works.
The best laundry bag is sized for the objects you wash and used as one part of their care routine. It should help organize and protect within an appropriate process, not serve as permission to ignore the garment's instructions.
